SMPS Testing

The SMPS is the power supply unit of every computer. It is SWITCHED MODE POWER SUPPLY (SMPS). Named so because the output is obtained by the switching (i.e., ON & OFF) of devices like mosfet, igbt etc. The switching devices may be connected to a current transformer in which varying current in the input of the transformer results in the output. A typical ATX 2.03 SMPS is as shown below. ATX x.0y represents the type of cabinet for your computer. There are different types of cabinets available for computers such as ATX, microATX etc.

Let’s try how to test an ATX type SMPS. It’s really simple than you think. First let us identify different type of connectors coming out of SMPS. They are as shown below.

To check the SMPS take the main connector in your hand. It is really easy to identify it because it is the biggest pin among others coming out of SMPS. When you connect the power chord to the SMPS and switch it ON, it won’t work.  To make it work, connect the GREEN &BLACK terminals using a wire as shown in the figure. Look the picture closely. Now switch on the SMPS and the fan of the SMPS starts rotating. If the fan doesn’t work, then your SMPS is faulty.
To get further details on electronics part of the SMPS ,the figure below may help you.
